Community-Stewarded Stories
Community-controlled media infrastructure (training, tools, distribution, revenue) so people tell their own stories on their own terms.
*The need:* When institutions tell all the stories, communities get defined by outsiders.
When institutions tell all the stories, communities get defined by outsiders. This recipe puts storytelling power directly in community hands by building media infrastructure the community controls: training, tools, distribution, and revenue, so people tell their own stories on their own terms. Editorial control must stay with the community regardless of who funds it, storytellers are paid as professionals from day one, distribution is built before it is needed, and the work creates beats institutions ignore. A note for traditional newsrooms: we already run op-eds and guest columns with light editorial intervention and trust readers to tell the difference, so community-stewarded storytelling extends that same trust.
How it works
- Identify whose stories dominate and whose are missing.
- Recruit storytellers from unheard communities.
- Train together on ethics, techniques, and tools.
- Create an editorial process controlled by the community.
- Build distribution before you need it.
- Pay storytellers from day one.
- Track how the mainstream narrative shifts.
