Care Webs
Networks of 20-30 people who check on each other regularly and respond collectively before issues become emergencies.
*The need:* People fall through cracks because care systems are fragmented.
People fall through the cracks because care systems are fragmented and uncoordinated. This recipe weaves formal and informal care into nets that catch people before a crisis: networks of 20 to 30 people who already somewhat know each other check in regularly, spot needs early, and respond collectively before issues become emergencies. Start from existing relationships, normalize asking for and receiving help, respond quickly to small needs so they do not become big ones, and include joy and appreciation so caregivers do not burn out.
How it works
- Start with people who already share something: a block, a workplace, or an identity.
- Map what everyone can offer and might need.
- Create a simple check-in rhythm, like a weekly text or monthly meal.
- When someone shares a need, respond quickly.
- Use collective resources when individual ones are not enough.
- Celebrate care given and received.
Ingredients
- 20-30 people who somewhat know each other
- a check-in channel
- a small pooled resource (~$100)
- agreement on how to respond
Minimum resources: Free to start; a $100+ emergency fund helps.
You'll know it's working when
- small needs met before crisis
- ER visits drop
- 'I feel supported'
- care becomes mutual
Field tips
- start with existing relationships
- normalize asking for help
