Build: Adopt-a-Thing for Your Block

A starter build: the Adopt-a-Hydrant pattern, remixed — a map of small civic objects (tree wells, storm drains, benches, little libraries) that neighbors claim, name, and care for.

In 2011, Code for America fellow Erik Michaels-Ober built Adopt-a-Hydrant for Boston: a simple map where residents claimed a fire hydrant to shovel out after snowstorms — and named them. The pattern got remixed within months: storm drains, tsunami sirens in Honolulu. The insight wasn't hydrants; it was that *small civic objects + personal claim + a name* turns maintenance into relationship.

Build it for your block: a map of the things that need a person — tree wells that need summer watering, storm drains that need leaf-clearing before rain, a bench that needs paint, the little free library that needs restocking. A neighbor taps one, adopts it, names it ('Drainy McDrainface has a steward now'), and gets gentle seasonal nudges tied to real conditions (heat waves for trees, storm forecasts for drains).

Show the whole block's care at a glance: every adopted thing, every steward first-name, every 'this thing needs a person' gap. Celebrate streaks at the block party.

Constraint: adoption is an offer, not an enforcement — the tool never shames lapsed stewards, it just quietly reopens the adoption. And it works without an account for viewing; the barrier to seeing your block's care should be zero.
