FixMyStreet Platform

FixMyStreet launched in the UK in 2007 with a radical simplicity: put a pin in a map, describe the broken thing, and the site figures out which authority is responsible and emails them — publishing the report, the response, and the fix (or the silence) for everyone to see. The public ledger is the point: it converts individual complaints into shared civic memory. The UK site passed its millionth report in 2017 and now carries roughly 12,000 reports a month.

The FixMyStreet Platform is AGPL-3.0 open source with 20+ installations worldwide — Zurich's 'Züri wie neu,' Sweden's FixaMinGata, Uruguay's PorMiBarrio (run by DATA Uruguay). mySociety, the UK charity behind it, sells a hosted version to councils, which funds the commons code.

One honest design lesson rides with it: reporting tools inherit the biases of who reports (research on 311-style systems finds reporting skews toward homeowners and wealthier blocks) and what gets reported *about* — the pattern is at its best pointed at conditions and infrastructure, and at its worst pointed at people.

Neighborhood remix: a 'FixMyBlock' where reports route not to the council but to the block's own repair crew — whoever owns the ladder, the drill, or the relationship with the alderperson — with the same public see-it-through ledger.
