Snowmageddon Cleanup: One Neighbor, One Weekend, One Map

During DC's 2010 blizzards, one Dupont Circle resident stood up an Ushahidi map to coordinate digging out. The Washington Post pointed the city at it — and the next winter, other cities launched their own in under an hour.

When back-to-back blizzards dropped nearly three feet of snow on Washington DC in February 2010 and shut the federal government, Ryan Ozimek — a Dupont Circle resident who ran a nonprofit-sector web firm — stood up an Ushahidi deployment to coordinate his neighborhood's dig-out. 'I really thought it was going to be just a fun experiment with my friends.'

Within a day the Washington Post had adopted and promoted it as 'Snowmageddon Cleanup.' Ozimek watched the arc every mutual aid organizer knows: the first twenty-four hours were all requests — stuck cars, unplowed streets, elderly neighbors snowed in — and then neighbors began self-organizing to answer them, claiming requests the way Bed-Stuy Strong volunteers would claim Airtable tickets a decade later.

The remix proved the pattern: during December 2010's storm, versions launched for New York, Boston, Newark, and Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey — a new city could stand one up in under an hour.

What it teaches: the purest documented case of this shelf's thesis. Global open-source infrastructure (built for Kenyan election monitoring), deployed by one neighbor for one neighborhood in a weekend, made real by a trusted local channel pointing people at it. The map did the matching; the shovels were already on the block.
