DavisWiki: The Town That Wrote Itself Down

In June 2004, housemates Philip Neustrom, Mike Ivanov, and Paul Ivanov sketched an idea over burritos: an openly editable encyclopedia of Davis, California — everything local, from bike-route lore and burrito rankings to city council politics and neighborhood history. Within three weeks of launch it had a hundred users and six hundred pages; within months it was core infrastructure. Surveys found roughly one in seven residents had *contributed*, and nearly three-quarters of residents used it as their primary housing resource; the community famously crowd-exposed a serial con artist through it.

A Knight News Challenge grant generalized the software into LocalWiki, and hundreds of communities started their own. Few reached Davis's density. The software was never the scarce ingredient — the habit was: a decade of residents reflexively writing down what they knew, tending pages the way other towns tend gardens.

What it teaches: a town-scale knowledge commons is achievable by residents when editing is radically easy and the scope is *everything local*. And the honest corollary from the replication record: launch is nothing, habit is everything. A neighborhood remixing this should start with twenty pages neighbors actually need weekly — not an empty wiki and an announcement.
