Camerados and Public Living Rooms

<p>Maff Potts had spent years as CEO of various charities in the UK, working on homelessness, domestic abuse, and social isolation. What he kept noticing was that traditional approaches addressed symptoms but missed root causes. The two things every person needs, he concluded, are friends and purpose. In 2015, he founded Camerados — a "gentle tea drinking revolution" — from his bedroom. The concept was the Public Living Room: a space furnished like a comfortable living room — sofas, bean bags, soft furnishings, usually a piano — placed in a public setting where anyone could walk in, sit down, have a cup of tea, and simply be alongside other people. No agenda, no intake forms, no case management. Just presence.</p><p>A "Camerado" is somewhere between a stranger and a friend — liberated from the compulsion to fix someone's problems, free to simply be with them. Maff received nearly three quarters of a million pounds from the National Lottery to roll out Public Living Rooms across the UK. Within a decade, the movement had established over 170 Public Living Rooms across five countries — in libraries, marketplaces, community centers, a cafe in Australia, a university in Scotland, and even a prison. In Blackpool, the Living Room became a space where people experiencing loneliness could find informal support and company without the stigma of seeking services.</p><p>The insight driving Camerados is that loneliness is not a condition to be treated but a signal that the built environment has failed to provide what humans need: comfortable places to simply be together. The Public Living Room is relational technology at its most elemental — a sofa, a kettle, and the permission to belong.</p>
