Bradley Street Bicycle Co-op, New Haven

<p>The Bradley Street Bicycle Co-op started with a serendipitous encounter. In 2015, John Martin — an architect by training — was refurbishing a brick building at 138 Bradley Street in New Haven's East Rock neighborhood. The building had been his father's — Martin Electric. Joel LaChance, who had owned bicycle shops for years, and Paul Hammer, who ran a pedicab service, were both nearby, rehabbing bikes. They got to talking. What emerged was a cooperative bicycle workshop that welcomes anyone and everyone.</p><p>The Co-op's mission is twofold. First, it provides space for cyclists to repair their own bikes, or learn how — with volunteers on hand, access to tools, and periodic classes in basic maintenance. Second, it refurbishes donated bikes for resale at reasonable prices, while others go to the Connecticut Mental Health Center and to new arrivals through Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services. A major source of bikes is the New Haven Police Department, which turns over unclaimed bikes after a year. What makes Bradley Street a story about relational technology is how the bicycle becomes a connector across difference. In a city that is diverse but often divided, the Co-op creates a space where Yale students, longtime residents, recent immigrants, and people navigating mental health challenges all find themselves working side by side, hands greasy, figuring out a derailleur together. The shared activity — tangible, physical, useful — creates the conditions for relationships that New Haven's social geography might not otherwise produce.</p>
