The 5 Cs of Community
A simple framework for assessing the strength of a community. Five qualities, each useful on its own, more useful together:
- Connection
- Conversation
- Care
- Creativity
- Continuity
This framework appears in various forms across community-design literature. The version here is shaped to apply at neighborhood scale.
Connection
Do people in this community actually know each other? Names, faces, basic context, kids' names, work, what they're going through?
Connection is the floor. Without it, the other Cs can't develop. Most neighborhoods are weak on connection, often without realizing how weak. People know the neighbors on either side and almost nobody else.
Test: Could you, walking around your block, greet ten neighbors by name?
Build it with: [Block Party](../recipes/01-knowing-your-neighbors/block-party.md), [Welcome Wagon](../recipes/01-knowing-your-neighbors/welcome-wagon.md), [Porch Conversations](../recipes/01-knowing-your-neighbors/porch-conversations.md), [Map Your Neighborhood](../recipes/07-resilience/map-your-neighborhood.md)
Conversation
When people in the community talk to each other, do they talk about real things? Or only weather and surface pleasantries?
Conversation is what turns connection into relationship. A community where everyone knows each other but nobody has ever had a meaningful exchange is shallow. A community where there's a way to talk about what matters (joy, grief, fears, dreams, conflict) is deep.
Test: Is there a recurring practice in your community where people talk about real things?
Build it with: [Story-Sharing Potluck](../recipes/01-knowing-your-neighbors/story-sharing-potluck.md), [Death Cafe](../recipes/02-small-groups-for-support/death-cafe.md), [Microsolidarity Crew](../recipes/02-small-groups-for-support/microsolidarity-crew.md), [Talking Circle](../recipes/04-gathering-design/talking-circle.md)
Care
When someone in the community is struggling (illness, loss, hardship), does the community show up?
Care is the practical demonstration that the community is more than social. It is one of the strongest signals of community strength, and one of the hardest things to build artificially. Care emerges from connection and conversation, not the other way around.
Test: When the last neighbor on your block had a baby, lost a parent, or went through a medical crisis, did the community respond?
Build it with: [Meal Train](../recipes/02-small-groups-for-support/meal-train.md), [Mutual Aid Pod](../recipes/02-small-groups-for-support/mutual-aid-pod.md), [Dinner Party Grief](../recipes/02-small-groups-for-support/dinner-party-grief.md), [Block Stewards](../recipes/01-knowing-your-neighbors/block-stewards.md)
Creativity
Does the community make things together? Art, food, music, performances, gardens, repairs, celebrations, traditions?
Creativity transforms a community from a service unit into a generative one. Communities that make things together also know each other in different ways than communities that only manage logistics. Making is a form of conversation.
Test: In the last year, did your community produce something together: a party, a garden, an art project, a tradition?
Build it with: [Repair Cafe](../recipes/03-mutual-aid/repair-cafe.md), [Community Garden](../recipes/06-placemaking/community-garden.md), [Community-Built Playspace](../recipes/06-placemaking/community-built-playspace.md), [Come Out & Play](../recipes/10-play-and-joy/come-out-and-play.md), [Intersection Repair](../recipes/06-placemaking/intersection-repair.md)
Continuity
Does the community persist across years? Across leadership changes? Across membership changes?
Continuity is the test of whether the community is a living thing or a personality cult. A community that depends entirely on one charismatic person has not yet built continuity. A community that has weathered the departure of original conveners and continued has.
Test: If the most active person in your community moved away tomorrow, would the gatherings continue?
Build it with: [Neighborhood Association](../recipes/11-civic-rhythms/neighborhood-associations.md), [Front Porch Forum](../recipes/01-knowing-your-neighbors/front-porch-forum.md), [Sunday Assembly](../recipes/11-civic-rhythms/sunday-assembly.md), [Block Stewards](../recipes/01-knowing-your-neighbors/block-stewards.md), [Community Land Trust](../recipes/12-shared-land-and-home/community-land-trusts.md)
How to use the framework
A simple practice: once a year, rate your community on each of the five Cs from 1 to 5. Then ask: which one would most strengthen the whole? Spend the next year working on that one.
The Cs are not independent. Connection enables conversation. Conversation deepens care. Care expresses through creativity. Creativity, sustained, becomes continuity. Each strengthens the others.
But they're also distinct. You can have a community with strong connection and weak conversation (an active block club where nobody talks about anything real). You can have strong creativity and weak care (an art collective that doesn't show up for each other in hard times). The diagnostic helps you see which thread is thin.
